Equality Illinois (EQIL), the state’s oldest and largest organization advocating for equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals, seeks a full-time Field Fellow for a one year paid fellowship. The Field Fellow is dedicated to advancing equal treatment for the LGBT community through education and advocacy in Illinois.

Equality Illinois is seeking a Development Associate to assist the Director of Development in growing a comprehensive development program that emphasizes cultivation and stewardship of individual, foundational, and corporate donors. The Development Associate will be primarily responsible for smaller events, online fundraising, and prospect research, but will also support the Director in the execution of larger events to achieve the fundraising goals of the organization.

North Carolinians Narrowly Escape Anti-LGBT Sneak Attack

Legislators in North Carolina attempted an 11th-hour sneak attack on LGBT North Carolinians by attempting to attach language to Senate Bill 279, which would have prohibited cities and counties from passing nondiscrimination ordinances in cases of public accommodations and housing and from passing higher minimum wages or regulations involving employment practices.

Federation Staffers Train Houston Activists on Effective Messaging for Nondiscrimination

Many people are surprised to learn that in the fourth largest city in the country, it’s perfectly legal to fire someone, deny them an apartment, or refuse them service at a business simply because of who they are. That’s why, earlier this year, activists in Houston were pushing for HERO, the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance, a law protecting Houston residents from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, familial status, military status, religion, disability, genetic information, and sex.

Member Resource: SIECUS Publication Provides Individual State Snapshot of Sex Education and Federal Funding

Although our country has come a long way in teaching sexual education to adolescents, many states still teach ineffective abstinence-only-until-marriage programs to students. Many of our members live in these states, but are working within their communities to implement more comprehensive sexual education programs that educate students while supporting the sexual health of adolescents. But federal funding plays a huge role in what sexual education programs can be provided.
