The movement for full LGBT equality is making incredible headway and state-based equality organizations have played a critical role.

That’s why I’m proud to share with you Equality Federation’s 2013 Annual Report, which provides a look at how we work with states to make change happen at the local and state level.

To call 2013 a historic year is an understatement. At the Federation, we continued to sharpen our focus on winning in the communities we call home. And our members transformed the movement, creating change in every corner of the country.

The Supreme Court struck down the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in June, and by the end of the year, eight states had granted the freedom to marry to loving, committed couples. We witnessed dozens of amazing gains in local nondiscrimination policies, and huge advances in efforts to keep our most vulnerable young people in school and thriving.

Each year, Equality Federation is proud to be the movement builder and strategic partner to state-based organizations advocating for LGBT people. During a monumental 2013, we concentrated our work to make an impact across the country through our three flagship programs: Equality Federation’s State Leadership Project, our Fairness Project, and our Lived Equality Project.

Through this work, the Federation team:

• Welcomed 6 new Executive Directors to the state-based movement -- providing them with mentoring and support through our New Executive Director Boot Camp and one-on-one coaching.
• Hosted our annual Summer Meeting in Salt Lake City with 150 attendees (38 more attendees than 2012!)
• Brought together leaders from states across the South and Midwest at our Southern & Midwest Leadership Summits.
• Worked with leaders in 19 states to develop strategic and advocacy plans that strengthened their organizations.
• Worked with states beyond the marriage milestone as they engaged in a process to determine their organizations’ futures.
• Our Fairness Project team marshaled more than $1.5 million in investments to state-based campaigns.

Our work in 2013 helped build a strong movement for equality across this country -- and the progress we created last year set our current unstoppable momentum in motion.
