We Stand with Gavin & All Transgender Students!

March 2, 2017

Update: The Supreme Court has, disappointingly, declined to hear the case. It is important to note, however, their decision to send the case back to the federal appeals court doesn’t change the legal protections that transgender students have under Title IX or the Constitution.

Equality Federation will continue to fight for the inclusion and fair treatment of transgender students. We are encouraged by the outpouring of support for Gavin and other transgender students across the nation.  Over 400 people attended a recent advocacy day organized by Equality Texas where dozens of youth and their families spoke out against pending anti-transgender legislation. Ultimately, justice will fall on the side of fairness and equality for all.

Equality Federation Submits Brief in Historic Transgender Student Case

Being in high school is hard enough without having to face the United States Supreme Court and explain why you need to be treated like everyone else. But for Gavin Grimm, a transgender boy at the center of historic case on the dignity and equality of transgender Americans, his junior and senior years have been marked by proceedings in his legal case, which will be heard by the nation’s highest court later this month.

Equality Federation is proud to have joined, with our own brief, thousands of Americans who were a part of “friend-of-the-court” briefs filed directly to the Supreme Court. Thousands of people spoke out – including teachers and administrators from dozens of states, faith leaders of all different religions from every single state, other transgender students and their family members, state Attorneys General and city officials who say that cities are strengthened when no one faces legal discrimination, and law enforcement officials committed to protecting transgender Americans from harassment.

The briefs are a powerful assertion that protecting all people from discrimination is an American value. They demonstrate for the first time in a U.S. Supreme Court case that a broad and diverse array of people across the political spectrum and throughout the country support transgender equality. And they communicate a vital moral imperative to the nation: #StandWithGavin (tweet!).
