They’re at it again. Our opponents are back on the attack.

Lawmakers in Mississippi have passed a bill that would allow businesses to refuse service, based on their religious beliefs, to LGBT people or anyone else. The bill will become law if Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signs it.

This bill is a blatant attack on LGBT Mississippians who are already denied critical nondiscrimination protections. And it is part of a dangerous movement sweeping the country that poses a serious threat to LGBT people and attempts to roll back the progress we’ve made.

In February, LGBT advocates joined with businesses, faith leaders, and a broad coalition of allies to successfully urge Arizona Governor Jan Brewer to veto a similar bill. Now, we must come together again and send a strong message to Governor Bryant.

Imagine the impact a bill like this could have: a pharmacist, a hotel manager, a mortgage loan officer, a store owner -- they could pick and choose who to serve and who to deny. Transgender people could be denied hormones. A same-sex couple celebrating their honeymoon could be turned away from a hotel or inn. A school counselor could refuse guidance to a young LGBT person.

One of our nation’s most fundamental values is the free exercise of religion. Yet freedom of religion does not give businesses the right to discriminate based on the beliefs of individuals.

Tell Governor Bryant: this bill isn’t about religious freedom – it’s a license for Mississippians to discriminate against LGBT people. [LINK]

Mississippi should be open for business to everyone. Keep fighting with us until that happens.
