Resource Hub Launched to Support LGBTQ Community Through COVID-19 Pandemic

March 31, 2020

Equality Federation published an evolving list of resources for LGBTQ rights organizations and community members in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Made up of 40+ member groups from states across the country, Equality Federation members are focused on providing localized advocacy and support for LGBTQ people.

“These are trying times and we need each other right now, more than ever. LGBTQ people can be at higher risk for COVID-19 because of generally higher rates of tobacco use, HIV, and cancer, which can leave our community more vulnerable. Equality Federation created this resource hub to help individuals and organizations survive the virus, featuring links to local toolkits compiled by our state-based member groups,” said Rebecca Isaacs, executive director of Equality Federation. “In the midst of this national crisis, Idaho’s Governor signed an anti-transgender youth sports bill and a bill that bans transgender people from changing their birth certificates. Some legislators are so intent on finding ways to hurt LGBTQ people that even a pandemic is not enough to make them focus on helping their constituents rather than targeting vulnerable people. That’s why it is so important to put these tools in the hands of people who need them. Equality Federation will care for the LGBTQ community even when those elected to represent us will not.”

Equality Federation’s COVID-19 resource hub features:

  • State-based resources for LGBTQ community members
  • Fundraising webinars and tools for raising money during the pandemic
  • Organizational development tips for setting up a remote workplace
  • Organizing strategies for times of social distancing
  • Online facilitation resources
  • General COVID-19 information including ‘know your rights’ info

“We have been operating remotely for years. Now that COVID-19 has forced many organizations to close their offices and implement work from home policies, we want to share our expertise to help them continue to operate at a high level.” said Fran Hutchins, deputy director of Equality Federation. “We know that coronavirus has created challenges for our community and we want to offer support and assistance to organizations working virtually for the first time. Equality Federation and our member organizations are committed to making sure those who serve the LGBTQ community have the resources needed to handle the challenges presented by this pandemic and advance our rights across the country.“
