SUMMARY
The Empire State Pride Agenda is New York's statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights and advocacy organization. Our mission is to win equality and justice for LGBT New Yorkers and our families. Through our education, organizing and advocacy programs, we work toward creating a broadly diverse alliance of LGBT people and our allies in government, communities of faith, labor, all sectors of the workforce and other social justice movements to achieve equality for LGBT New Yorkers and the broader goals of social, racial and economic justice.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Manager of Government Affairs will oversee the governmental advocacy initiatives of the Pride Agenda, especially passage of state and city legislation. Specific duties include :

  • Establishing relationships with the New York City Council and the Mayoral Administration to protect Pride Agenda funded programs, and to secure new funding streams;
  • Maintaining and deepening relationships with governmental officials and their staffs in New York City and Albany;
  • Conceptualizing and coordinating legislative advocacy campaigns;
  • Designing and managing the Pride Agenda's Political Action Committee's endorsement process in statewide and non-statewide election years;
  • Coordinating the Pride Agenda's legislative based coalitions including efforts to pass the Gender Expression Non Discrimination Act, the Child Parent Security Act and the measure to outlaw reparative therapy for minors in New York State;
  • Planning governmental components of events such as advocacy days and the annual Equality & Justice Day in late April, including scheduling of lobby visits for hundreds of activists;
  • Monitoring and reporting of legislation pertinent to the Pride Agenda's mission;
  • Submitting all filings timely with the New York State Temporary Commission on Lobbying;
  • Supporting other staff on organizing activities such as Pride events, speaking engagements, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.A. degree or higher, preferably in political science or related field.
  • At least one year of legislative, lobbying or governmental experience, ideally dealing with New York politics
  • Knowledge of New York City politics and political arenas
  • Commitment to achieving equality and justice for LGBT New Yorkers and our families
  • Strong competence around issues of importance to transgender and gender non-conforming people;
  • Excellent writing, speaking and organization skills
  • Ability to work independently and juggle multiple tasks
  • Familiarity with creating and managing databases, including Microsoft Excel
  • Available to work some nights and weekends, and travel in New YorkState
  • Familiarity with legislative advocacy campaigns

COMPENSATION
Salary is commensurate with experience and nonprofit sector. Excellent employer-paid benefits package including vacation, medical, life and long and short term disability insurance.
