Building Leaders

April 28, 2013

Strong leaders have propelled the movement for equality forward, with unprecedented wins over the last decade. Now our movement is facing new challenges -- from working in more conservative parts of the country to advancing social justice policies like immigration reform and health equity. Through training, coaching, and mentoring, we're building the leadership capacity of our movement -- from those just entering the sector as college interns to experienced executive directors and board members looking to grow.

Executive Director Development

Our movement is only as strong as our leaders, who face incredible challenges as they work to advance equality in every corner of the country. At the Federation, we're committed to developing the Executive Directors who are tasked with leading our state-based organizations. At our annual New Executive Director Boot Camp, we bring together new leaders with experienced executives for two days of in-depth training on personal leadership, financial management, staff supervision, and other critical skills. On an ongoing basis, we provide support through coaching, connecting new leaders to mentors, and facilitating peer-based learning between our state executive directors. Whether you're a new Executive Director just getting started or a seasoned leader looking for a sounding board, we can help. Just contact the staff member representing your region.

Board Development

Strong boards are critical for state groups to thrive. These volunteer leaders provide vision, direction, and oversight as organizations work to grow a movement for equality in their states. But effective boards don't happen magically. Building and developing a strategic group of board members to lead the work of the organization takes training, planning, and an ongoing commitment to following best practices. At the Federation, we provide customized consultation, on-site training, and meeting facilitation to strengthen organizational governance and develop strong, effective boards. No matter what form it takes, in all our work with boards, we focus on defining roles, fulfilling responsibilities, and becoming effective fundraisers. To request Federation support to develop your board, please contact the staff member representing your region.

Summer Meeting

The Federation Summer Meeting is the premier gathering of LGBT movement leaders. This annual conference provides staff and board members of state equality groups as well as our national partners with the opportunity to connect, collaborate, and build camaraderie.  Over the course of three days, we host an important dialog about the future of our movement while offering sessions that are geared toward building greater success in lobbying, organizing, communications, organizational development, and more. Every year, attendees tell us they return to their states and to their work with renewed energy, fresh ideas, and a stronger network to help them secure equality. As of today, Equality Federation has finalized $240,000 in seed grants for our partners' electoral work. Many groups have been using these grants to leverage more funding. However, members still report that they need to raise $6M to contact every voter we need to win. Help us move more resources quickly to states with the greatest needs.
