Gov. Brown: Sign the Gender Recognition Act

September 19, 2017

Equality Federation applauds Transgender Law Center and Federation member Equality California for their leadership on this legislation and calls on Governor Brown to sign it into law.

Statement by Mark Snyder, Director of Communications
I hope Governor Brown does the right thing and signs this commonsense legislation. As Californians we value fairness and we cherish the diversity of our state.
Most people know from a very young age that they are either male or female, but that is not true for everyone. What I have long understood about myself is that in my heart, in my soul, and in my mind I truly do not feel that male or female matches who I am on the inside.
To have my identification reflect my authentic self would be validating and feel like a weight off my shoulders. For so many nonbinary people like myself, having gender markers that match our identities could alleviate potentially discriminatory situations and make us safer. Everyone, after all, has to show their ID at some point.
