20 Anti-LGBT Bills Introduced in Texas

May 14, 2015

Twenty bills that could result in discrimination against gay and transgender Texans have been introduced so far this year. Among them that have made it out of committee, House Bill 4105 would bar use of public funds to issue or recognize a marriage license for same sex couples. The bill could result in a flurry of lawsuits given it stands in clear contradiction to court rulings that a ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. And, it will hopefully contradict a Supreme Court Ruling on marriage equality due by the end of June. The bill ignores Texas’s responsibility to adhere to the rule of law and the constitution - a slap in the face to democracy.

Executive Director of Equality Texas, a Federation member,  Chuck Smith told MSNBC, “Texas is pioneering a new strategy to prevent equality for its LGBT residents. At its core, HB 4105 seeks to subvert any ruling that would allow the freedom to marry for loving, same-sex couples.”

Recent polling shows a strong, clear majority of Texans oppose discrimination against their gay and transgender friends and family and support legal protections. Businesses such as American Airlines and Dell have spoken out against this and other bills that would promote discrimination.
