The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals denied the Alabama Attorney General’s request for a stay on a judge’s ruling allowing same-sex marriage in Alabama.  This should clear the way for same-sex marriage to begin next week unless the Supreme Court intervenes. 

Equality Federation gives a hearty congratulations to Equality Alabama and the lawyers and plaintiffs in the marriage case, as well as all of the hardworking LGBT people and families who have spoken out for equality.

Marriage for same-sex couples will give gay people the respect and dignity their commitments deserve, as well as tangible protections in order to build their lives together. We look forward to seeing the first joyful weddings take place for same-sex couples throughout the state, and against this backdrop of happy celebrations, we hope the court soon hands down a final ruling that ensures that all committed couples in Alabama, have the freedom to marry the person they love.”
